February 2025 marks four years since Myanmar's military overthrew its democratically elected government. Since that day, the country has been plunged into a nightmare of violence, repression, and economic collapse.
The junta, led by Min Aung Hlaing, has waged a brutal campaign against its own people, targeting peaceful protesters, ethnic minorities, and anyone who dares to oppose its rule. The military has bombed villages, arrested thousands, and committed countless atrocities. The economy has collapsed, leaving millions in poverty and despair.
Despite this, the international community has largely failed to act. While some countries have imposed sanctions and condemned the junta's actions, others have continued to engage with the regime, providing it with legitimacy and support. China, in particular, has pledged aid and technical support for the junta's planned elections, despite widespread skepticism about their legitimacy.
The people of Myanmar deserve better. They deserve to live in a country where their voices are heard, their rights are respected, and their leaders are chosen through free and fair elections. They deserve to live without fear of violence and repression.
As we mark this somber anniversary, we must renew our commitment to supporting the people of Myanmar in their struggle for democracy and human rights. We must hold the junta accountable for its crimes, and we must work together to build a future where the people of Myanmar can live in peace and freedom.
The world cannot look away.
The time to act is now.
